The reason I haven’t posted in a while is that I started a very lengthy project that will take several years to complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When Standard rotation was extended to a longer time frame, I felt this bookmarked an era. So I’m no longer playing any of the newer decks from an era where the card pool is much larger. Power creep + a larger card pool pretty much assures that newer decks will be much stronger than most of the the old classics. So the “Ultimate Standard” concept only represents decks played from 1995 – May 6 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is actually kind of nice, as we can now just collect ALL the decks played during this time, and discuss which ones are the “best,” without having to constantly test them against the newest decks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, there are still quite a few decks that haven’t even been piloted yet. I have tried to collect every deck list from a major tournament top 8. (“Major tournament” is a bit arbitrary, but generally this includes Grand Prixs and Pro Tours, Star City Games tournaments with a fairly large turnout, and some of the other independent tournaments that were hosted with decent prize money and turnout, if the lists were posted.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n
So right now I am working on playing all of the decks that we’ve never played before, randomly paired against other decks that we’ve never played before. Once a deck gets two more losses than wins, I’ll stop playing it. Eventually, we’ll have an interesting hierarchy of decks! But this will take years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
